Chiropractic adds great value to athletic performance [Published on Apr 3, 2017] Pro sports stars may grab all the headlines but even college and high school athletes can suffer from the effects of abusing prescription painkillers. |
A strong desire to enter the medical profession and having been a three-sport athlete in high school honed the focus of Dr. Cheyenne Fralick’s collegiate studies toward the treatment of sports related injury. This passion led her to the University at Buffalo (UB) where she majored in Exercise Science and obtained a strong knowledge base in the physiological, anatomical, biomechanical, and nutritional aspects of human physical activity. This training provided Dr. Fralick with a multidisciplinary environment where she learned about physical activity from a public health perspective and obtained strong scientific knowledge in the physiological effects of exercise on the individual. It also allowed her to develop a comprehensive understanding of how human movement influences health, fitness, and performance which prepared her for a career in healthcare that focuses on rehabilitation, prevention of injury and disease, community health and wellness as well as performance enhancement.
Dr. Fralick utilized her training at UB as a portal of entry into her doctoral studies at New York Chiropractic College where she further enhanced her skills as a sports injury physician by enrolling in the Sports Intern Program with Dr. Russell Ebbets. This thirty-two (32) week elective course provided Dr. Fralick with the skills and competencies required for a chiropractor to function as a member of an athletic health care team. During this course she established an understanding in the recognition, prevention and care of acute athletic injury and developed proficiency in basic first aid and CPR, field assessment and management of injury. As a Sports Intern Dr. Fralick developed competencies in the following areas:
- Abdominal and low back injury care
- Advanced wrapping and taping techniques
- Cervical spine injury
- Closed head injury identification, evaluation and care
- Traumatic muscle and joint injury care
- Transportation of the injured athlete
- Wound care and bandage application
During this period of her doctoral training Dr. Fralick was motivated to advance her knowledge of sports injury treatment and enrolled in an extracurricular Kinesio Taping certification program. Her Sports Intern training also allowed her the opportunity to apply her developed competencies and certification as a Kinesio Taping Practitioner at the following events:
- Boston Masters Invitational at Reggie Lewis Center, March 2008
- Albany’s Friehofer’s Run for Women, May 2008
- Syracuse Festival of Races, September 2008
- Region II Junior Olympics, Jamestown NY, July 2009
- Niagara Summer Classic, Rochester NY, July 2009
Dr. Fralick will provide you with a balanced approach to treatment and the healing of sports injuries. By incorporating physiotherapeutic intervention that focuses on strength and coordination along with chiropractic manipulative therapy to improve joint mobilization and range of motion she will assist the injured area(s) in returning to normal function. This approach to rehabilitation of sports injury develops coordination between the joints and the soft tissues that move them so that your return to the court, diamond, field, pitch, or track will be a healthy one.
